The Weight of the Crown: When Your Calling Comes with Unfinished Business

Writer's picture: Called To PurposeCalled To Purpose

We all love a good prophetic word, don’t we? “You’re stepping into new levels! The wealth of the wicked is being transferred to you! You’re walking into your inheritance!” Sounds amazing, right? Until you realize that your inheritance includes unfinished business.

When Solomon took the throne in 1 Kings, he inherited more than just the promise, the covenant, and the wisdom. He inherited his father David’s enemies, debts, unfinished wars, and the pressure to build something that would outlast him. See, the promise wasn’t just about growth and advancement—it also carried responsibility and warfare. The crown came with a cost.

And this is where we struggle.

The Tug of War: Peace vs. Battle

Solomon had to make a choice. Would he fight the battles that were left undone, or would he enjoy the peace that had been fought for? He chose peace. And don’t get me wrong—peace is good, but too much of it breeds complacency. And we all saw what happened, right?

Solomon got too comfortable. His love life went left, his idols went up, and before you knew it, the wisest man in history was worshiping false gods because he forgot that kings don’t just sit on thrones—they fight for them too.

On the flip side, too much war is just as dangerous. You can’t build if you’re constantly fighting. If you’re always in survival mode, you never get to thrive. So where do we find the balance? How do we build and battle at the same time?

I’ll be honest—I’m still figuring that part out.

The Pressure of Purpose

Let’s be real. Walking in purpose sounds beautiful on paper, but in reality? It’s overwhelming.

People love to talk about power and authority, but no one warns you about the pressure and responsibility that comes with it.

  • When you’re called to build for God, the stakes are higher.

  • When you’re entrusted with an assignment, the opposition is stronger.

  • When you carry a mantle, the warfare intensifies.

And listen, I get why people quit. It’s not that they didn’t love God. It’s not that they didn’t want to be faithful. It’s just that this walk is hard.

The Bible says to count it all joy—but sometimes, that joy feels like a far-off fantasy that you can’t quite grab hold of. You sacrifice more than you ever imagined. You let go of things you never thought you’d have to.

And if you knew back then what you know now? Maybe you wouldn’t have stepped into it so boldly.

The Reality of Being Chosen

We romanticize being “chosen,” but let’s talk about what it actually means.

When you inherit a calling, you inherit the unfinished struggles of your family, your generation, and your nation.

You’re carrying things that didn’t start with you, and God is expecting you to be the one to finish them.

So let’s be honest:

  • Are you really ready to give up everything for Him?

  • Are you ready to walk a road less traveled?

  • Are you okay with your sense of self fading into the background so that Christ can take center stage?

  • Are you willing to go through trials that sometimes don’t even make sense?

  • Are you willing to sit in uncertainty and trust Him anyway?

  • Are you willing to build His way, even if it means letting go of your own dreams?

Because that’s the cost.

Unfinished, But Not Forsaken

If this all sounds like a spiritual midlife crisis, I promise you—I get it. (Honestly, Solomon probably would have agreed, too.) But here’s what I’m learning:

Yes, the burden is heavy. Yes, the road is hard. But God never leaves unfinished business undone.

And if He called you, He’s already equipped you. The real question is:

Will you carry it to completion?
