For most of my life, I had the worst relationship with submission. The very idea of it felt like a trap—a form of weakness. If I wasn’t in control or leading, I would freeze you out. Submission, to me, was a loss of power and agency.
But then, one day, I was meditating on the Word during some quiet time with my homie, God, when it hit me like a ton of bricks. Submission to God is not weakness; it’s strength in alignment with His will.
God is so powerful that even the earth—a solid, immovable rock—submits to His instruction. Mountains quake, seas part, and the sun stands still when He commands. But humans? We’re granted free will. Lucky us, right?
Here’s the thing: God’s permissive will may allow us to make choices, but His ultimate creative authority remains. His will will be done. The only question is: Will you fall in line with His purpose, or will you keep trying to “figure it out” on your own?
The Nudge to Surrender
If you feel that nudge from the Holy Spirit to submit to God’s calling, don’t ignore it. Submitting to Jesus Christ isn’t about losing your autonomy—it’s about gaining clarity, purpose, and peace. When you fully surrender to Him, you enter a season of learning to serve under His tutelage. You begin to understand the importance of having a personal relationship with Him before He sends you into the field to build in His name.
Before I came to Christ, I built from a place of self-interest. Sure, I wanted to create an impactful business, and I had a small desire to help people. But if I’m being honest, my primary focus was me. I wanted to prove something—show the world what I could achieve.
But in my “singular season,” a period where God pulled me aside to refine me, He revealed a powerful truth: Submission is not weakness if God is in it.
Building on a Firm Foundation
When you submit to God, He guides and corrects you. He strengthens your foundation so that you can build faster, better, and more purposefully than you ever could on your own. As Psalm 127:1 reminds us:
"Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain."
God’s revelation hit me hard: Before He brings the right people or resources into your life, He works on you. He aligns your heart and prepares you for the mission ahead. And here’s the best part—His vision comes with His provision. When you submit to Him, you’re not just building for yourself; you’re building for His glory.
A Dream and a Revelation
Let me share a recent dream that gave me a powerful revelation. In the dream, I was at my laptop, stressed out about multiple deadlines. I was so consumed by the grind that I didn’t notice the ground beneath me shifting. Suddenly, it gave way, and I fell into a vast ocean.
I panicked—I didn’t know how to swim. To my right was a whale, and to my left, a shark. I froze, preparing to become the shark’s dinner. But then, just as suddenly as I fell, I was back on solid land.
When I woke up, the Holy Spirit shared the meaning behind the dream.
Most of us are stuck building on shaky foundations—ones we’ve crafted from our own might and power. We rely on the systems of this world (the “matrix”) to give us stability, but they’re designed to drain us. That’s why I fell into the water—the foundation I was standing on wasn’t rooted in God.
The water, I realized, symbolized life. In the chaos of the ocean, there were two symbols:
The shark, a predator representing the false promises of the world, like living paycheck to paycheck or the endless pursuit of material success.
The whale, a savior symbolizing Jesus Christ, who offers us abundant life and truth.
The moment I surrendered and entered a covenant with God, He gave me a second chance. He pulled me out of the water and placed me on solid ground.
Submission is Freedom
Submission to God’s will isn’t a trap—it’s freedom. When you surrender, you’re no longer building alone. You’re working with the Creator of the universe, who sees the full picture.
If you’ve been stressed, stuck, or struggling, ask yourself: Am I building on a shaky foundation, or am I standing on the Rock of Christ?
The choice is yours, but I encourage you to submit to God’s will. Trust Him to guide you, correct you, and use you for His glory. He wants to give you an abundant life filled with truth and freedom.
A Season of Refinement
God doesn’t waste a single moment. When you submit to Him, He begins a process of refinement. He works on your character, aligns your heart, and teaches you to trust Him. This season may feel isolating or challenging, but it’s necessary.
Before I could step into my calling, God had to strip away my old ways of thinking. The version of me that sought validation from applause? Gone. The me who thought a six-figure salary would bring fulfillment? Gone. God didn’t just want me to succeed; He wanted me to thrive in my purpose.
This season taught me that submission is not about control—it’s about trust. And when you trust God fully, you allow Him to move in ways that exceed your imagination.
