Starting from Scratch: Embracing the New Canvas

Writer's picture: Called To PurposeCalled To Purpose

January 2025 was... a ride. If I had to sum it up in one phrase, it would be: adjusting to the shift—and let me tell you, it has not been easy.

Starting from scratch is never comfortable, especially when it means leaving behind everything familiar. The places, the people, the mindsets that once made you feel understood—they no longer fit. And the hardest part? Accepting that you’re never going back.

I’ve felt the weight of this shift in ways I can’t fully articulate yet. It has stretched me, rocked me, and forced me to confront parts of myself I didn’t even know needed addressing. And while I can’t see the full picture just yet, I know one thing for sure: I will never be the same. That thought is both terrifying and exhilarating.

When God Hands You a Blank Canvas

If you’ve ever felt like God wiped the slate clean and handed you a fresh canvas, you know the mix of emotions that come with it. Excitement? Sure. But also, sheer panic. Because now, you have to start from scratch.

And here’s the kicker: You don’t get to paint with the same old brushes. You don’t get to copy and paste the past into the future. Everything about this season requires new tools, new insights, new levels of faith.

Nehemiah had to start from scratch when he rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 2:17-18). The disciples had to start from scratch when they left their nets to follow Jesus (Matthew 4:19-20). Even Paul had to start from scratch when he went from persecuting Christians to preaching the gospel (Acts 9:1-22).

The common thread? God called them into something new. And they had to trust Him without knowing the full picture.

When Starting Over Feels Like Loss

The thing no one tells you about new beginnings is that they often feel like grief.

You grieve the old season, the old version of yourself, the comfort of predictability. You grieve the clarity you once had—even if it was built on false security. And sometimes, you even grieve the struggles you were used to because at least they were familiar.

But here’s the truth: God is not calling you to start over because He wants to see you struggle. He’s calling you to start over because He wants to build something greater through you.

The Blueprint is His, Not Yours

One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned this month is that I don’t get to dictate the blueprint. I don’t get to decide how the story unfolds. My job is to show up, trust, and obey.

And if you’re in a season of starting from scratch, let this be your encouragement:

  1. Release Control. God already knows the outcome. Your job is not to control it but to align with it.

  2. Embrace the Unknown. It’s okay not to have all the answers. Faith is trusting that God’s plan is still good even when you can’t see the next step.

  3. Stay on Your Prayer Post. This is a season where spiritual warfare will intensify. Stay prayed up, stay in the Word, and keep your armor on (Ephesians 6:10-18).

  4. Surround Yourself with the Right People. The wrong voices can keep you stuck in the past. Get in community with people who are walking in alignment with God’s will.

You’re Not Alone in This

I know how lonely and unsettling it can feel to start over, but you don’t have to walk this journey alone. If you’re in a season of transition, surrender, or stepping into the unknown, I invite you to join the Purpose Tribe—a community of like-minded believers navigating God’s calling together.

Join us here and let’s walk this out in faith.

January was hard. But February? It’s time to build.
