Overcoming Self: The Battle Within

Writer's picture: Called To PurposeCalled To Purpose

I realized that I am my own worst enemy. I constantly allow my flesh to take over in times when I should know better and do better as a warrior. But I am keenly aware that God is gracious enough to understand me in ways no human can. They could try, but they cannot 100% relate to me—and that’s okay.

Dharius Daniels said, "You have to be okay being misunderstood because even Jesus Christ in his perfection was still misunderstood by the very people he was looking to help."

When you are so used to performing to be loved and seeking out love, and then you meet Jesus Christ who simply says, "Come to me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28), it can be hard to accept and believe at first. That’s why He walks with you. He is patient. He does not expect perfection. He just wants you to continue choosing Him, regardless of your shortcomings.

The hardest person to face in this battle of overcoming self is you. The version of you that wants to take control, prove something, or make a statement. The version of you that wrestles between surrendering and striving. But the beautiful thing about God is that He is not afraid of our contradictions. He knows our struggles, yet He still calls us.

It’s humbling to know that even when I fall short, God’s love remains constant. I may be inconsistent, but His grace is unwavering. The journey of overcoming self is not about achieving perfection but about continual surrender—choosing to let God refine me instead of resisting His process.

I used to think that loving myself was about self-indulgence—treating myself, hyping myself up, and making sure I looked good on the outside. But true self-love is deeper than that. It is seeing myself the way God sees me. It is choosing to believe that I am fearfully and wonderfully made, even on the days when my emotions try to convince me otherwise (Psalm 139:14).

Some days, I feel like I am on top of the world. Other days, I struggle to get out of bed. But God’s love isn’t performance-based, and my worth isn’t determined by how “productive” I am. His love is steady. His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). So instead of beating myself up, I am learning to extend to myself the same grace that God gives me.

Here’s the truth: You are not alone in this. Many of us battle self-doubt, insecurities, and the temptation to take matters into our own hands. But God invites us to a different path—one of trust, surrender, and radical love.

Action Steps:

  1. Pause & Reflect: When faced with self-doubt or frustration, take a moment to acknowledge what’s happening. Is your flesh leading, or is the Spirit guiding?

  2. Surrender Daily: Every day, make the conscious decision to choose God over self. Say a simple prayer: “Lord, I choose You today. Help me to walk in Your will.”

  3. Immerse in the Word: Scripture is a weapon. Let it remind you of your identity and God’s unchanging love for you.

  4. Join a Community: Healing and growth happen in community. Surround yourself with like-minded believers who encourage and challenge you.

  5. Speak Life Over Yourself: Declare God’s truth over your life daily. Remind yourself that you are chosen, loved, and enough through Christ.
