"Love Thyself... Even on Day 21: A Quirky Guide to Self-Love, God’s Way"

Writer's picture: Called To PurposeCalled To Purpose

Let’s be real for a second. Self-love is HARD. Like, crazy-hard. Especially when the hormones are doing their thing, the laundry’s piled up, your business to-do list looks like a scroll from the Book of Revelation, and Day 20-21 of the hormonal calendar has you asking, “Why am I even like this?”

I’ll be the first to admit it: I’ve been my own worst critic. Honestly, some days I don’t need anyone else to stomp on my parade—I do it myself, free of charge. The Holy Spirit? Whew, that guy has a full-time job managing this girl because, honestly, I can be a handful.

But here’s the thing: self-love, especially as a Christian, is not this easy-breezy, Instagram-perfect bubble bath moment. It’s messy. It’s hard.

And spoiler alert: you don’t magically become a pro at loving yourself because you love Jesus Christ. Trust me, I checked.

The War Inside: Sin vs. Spirit

Pastor Michael Todd once said, "Every day you wake up, you have to decide who is winning: the sin side or the spirit side." And let me tell you, that is a lifelong war. The battle of hormones and self-doubt? Oh, it’s real. But knowing I’m not alone—that even someone as holy as Nehemiah probably had some self-doubt while rebuilding that wall—gives me comfort.

The truth is, as long as you’re on the Lord’s side, you’re already fighting from a place of victory. You're operating in finished realms. (Yes, I just gave you a reason to smile!)

Now, before you roll your eyes at another “God’s got you” blog, hear me out. Self-love isn’t about standing in front of the mirror chanting affirmations like you’re auditioning for a reality TV show. No, it’s about partnering with the One who created you, flaws and all, and loving yourself as He does.

The Struggle of Balance: Humble, Not Haughty

One of the trickiest parts of self-love is striking that balance between staying humble and not turning into someone who’s “too much.” (We all know that person.) It’s easy to swing between extremes: either beating yourself up for every little thing or becoming the star of your own personal pride parade. Neither is healthy, and neither is biblical.

In Philippians 2:3-4, Paul reminds us, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others.”

But wait—how do you “value others above yourself” while still practicing self-love? Good question. Here’s how I see it: self-love isn’t about ignoring others or being self-centered. It’s about loving yourself as God loves you so you can pour into others from a place of abundance, not exhaustion.

Motherhood and the "Failure" Syndrome

Now let’s talk about the moms out there. (Yes, I see you.) Some days, you feel like Supermom, crushing it at everything. Other days? You’re crying in the car because you forgot your kid’s permission slip and served them cereal for dinner—again.

Here’s the truth: You’re doing better than you think you are. Just like Romans 8:28 reminds us which btw is our business basis scripture, “All things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” Even the messy, chaotic parts of motherhood are working for your good.

Building a Business for God? Prepare for the Fight

Now, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of building a business that glorifies God. First, let me just say this: spiritual warfare is NOT funny. When you’re called to build in God’s name, the punches hit harder, the doubts get louder, and the enemy gets bolder.

That’s why your sword needs to stay sharp—just like Nehemiah and his crew, who built a wall with one hand and held a weapon with the other (Nehemiah 4:17).

Here’s what I’ve learned: without the Holy Spirit, those punches are lethal. But WITH Him? You’re unstoppable. Prayer becomes your lifeline, the Word your shield, and trust in God your firm foundation.

Action Steps to Self-Love

So, how do you navigate this self-love thing while staying rooted in God’s will? Here are some practical steps:

  1. Start Your Day with God: Spend 10-15 minutes in prayer or meditation. Ask God to remind you how He sees you—fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).

  2. Speak Life Over Yourself: Swap out negative self-talk for life-giving words. Try, “I am a vessel for God’s glory” instead of, “I’m such a failure.”

  3. Stay in the Word: Find scriptures that speak to your identity and worth in Christ. Tape them to your mirror if you need to!

  4. Rest Without Guilt: Even God rested on the seventh day. Give yourself permission to rest without feeling lazy or unproductive.

  5. Plug into Community: Surround yourself with people who lift you up and remind you of God’s truth.

Speaking of community, if you’re looking for a supportive, faith-filled group to walk alongside you, why not join the Purpose Tribe? It’s a free, safe space to grow, share, and navigate life together. Join us here.

Final Thoughts

Self-love isn’t about perfection or pretending to have it all together. It’s about leaning into God’s love and allowing Him to fill the gaps where you fall short. So, the next time you’re feeling like Day 21 is winning, remember: You are loved. You are chosen. And you are enough—flaws, hormones, cereal dinners, and all.

You got this, sis/bro (not the hormones part though LOL). Now go love yourself the way Jesus Christ loves you.
